Description d’un nouveau Sphingidae du genre Gnathothlibus Wallengren, 1858 des Philippines : Gnathothlibus melichari sp. n. (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae) Jean Haxaire, Pages 79-89, Published: 27 June 2016

Abstract

A new species of the sphingid genus Gnathothlibus is described from the islands of the Philippines. The new species is related to Gnathothlibus erotus (Cramer, 1777) but is easily separated from that species by several habitus characters as well as features of the male genitalia. Genetic analysis of the DNA barcode region of the mitochondrial gene, cytochrome oxidase I confirmed the distinctness of the two species. The habitus of both sexes, together with the male genitalia, are illustrated.

New species of Endoclita C. &. R. Felder, 1874 from Sumatra, Indonesia (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae) John R. Grehan1 & Carlos. G. C. Mielke2, Pages 17-35, Published: 30 March 2016

Abstract

Endoclita fahringeri sp. n. is described from a unique high elevation female from 3,000 m in the Leuser Mountains of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Considerable loss of forewing scales precludes complete characterization of external appearance, but several distinct features are identified and the species can be also separated from all other Endoclita spp. by forewing and hindwing shape and ornamentation. Female genitalia are compared with the limited descriptions available for other species. The conservation importance of this species is discussed with respect to biogeography and future economic pressures on the regional ecosystem. The female holotype will be deposited in the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriensis, Cibinong, Java, Indonesia. Dorsal images of the holotypes of E. aroura Tindale, 1958, E. Taranu Tindale, 1958, E. niger (van Eecke, 1915), and E. raapi Tindale, 1958 are provided in colour.

Description of a new species of Phassus Walker, 1856 from Costa Rica, Pallas, gen. n., with a new species from Guatemala, and taxonomic notes on Sthenopis Packard, [1865] (Lepidoptera, Hepialidae) Carlos G. C. Mielke1&John R. Grehan2, Pages 113-134, Published: 28 December 2015

Abstract

Phassus violetteae sp. n. from Costa Rica is described as new and compared to its putatively close relatives, Phassus triangularis Edwards, 1885 and Phassus huebneri (Geyer, [1838]). The holotype male will be deposited in INBIO, Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad, Santo Domingo de Heredia, Costa Rica. Pallas gen. n. is erected for Pallas reynaudi sp. n. (type species) from Guatemala. It differs from its morphologically closest genera Phassus Walker, 1856 and Schausiana Viette, 1950, mainly by the labial palp segments, absence of an androconial brush in the male metatibia and genital characters in both sexes. The holotype female of Pallas reynaudi sp. n. will be deposited in Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, Guatemala. Hepialus auratus Grote, 1878 syn. n. and Phassus eldorado Pfitzner, 1906 syn. n. are synonymized to Sthenopis pretiosus (Herrich-Schaffer, [1856]) comb. n. The male holotype of Phassus eldorado Pfitzner, 1906 is illustrated for the first time.

A new species of Samia Hübner, 1819 (“1816”) (Lepidoptera:Saturniidae) from Vietnam, with taxonomic updates for the genus Stefan Naumann1, Richard S. Peigler2 & Swen Löffler3, Pages 101-115, Published: 19 April 2014

Abstract

A new species of Samia is described from central and southern Vietnam: S. vuvanlieni, sp. n. The male holotype will be deposited in the collections of Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, Germany. It is nearest related to S. watsoni Oberthür, 1914 and S. formosana Matsumura, 1913, stat. rev., which we remove from synonymy and for which we figure some early instars. The replacement name Archaeosamia Brechlin, 2007, syn. nov., (for Desgodinsia Oberthür, 1914) is placed into synonymy of Samia. More than 10 years after publication of a generic revision of Samia, taxonomic acts published since then are summarized and evaluated. Aside from a few descriptions, there were some taxonomic acts to which we refer: S. burica Brechlin, 2007, syn. nov. is found to be a junior synonym of S. naessigi Naumann & Peigler, 2001; S. kalimantanensis U & L. H. Paukstadt, 2011, syn. nov. is interpreted as a junior synonym of S. tetrica (Rebel, 1924), and the revised synonymy of S. borneenesis (Rebel, 1925), stat. rev. with that taxon is re-instated; S. selayarensis U. & L. H. Paukstadt, 2013, syn. nov. is interpreted as a junior synonym of S. vandenberghi (Watson, 1915); the new taxon S. beekei U. & L. H. Paukstadt, 2012 is accepted as valid species; the proposed synonymy of S. pryeri (Butler, 1878), stat. rev. with S. cynthia (Drury, 1773) is revised; and, finally, the current synonymic status of S. canningi (Hutton, 1859) with S. ricini (Jones, 1791) is pointed out.

Note sur les genres Ceratomia Harris, 1839, et Dolbogene Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, au Mexique,et description de Ceratomia mooseri sp. n. et Ceratomia paltingi sp. n. (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae) Jean Haxaire 1 & Tomas Melichar 2, Pages 65-86, Published: 30 July 2012

Abstract

We describe here two new species of the genus Ceratomia, C. mooseri n. sp. based on three specimens collected in the State of Jalisco, and C. paltingi sp. n. based on a small series collected in the State of Oaxaca, Mexico. The habitus and male genitalia of these insects are compared with those of three allied species, C. hoffmanni Mooser, 1942, C. sonorensis Hodges, 1971, and C. undulosa (Walker, 1856). The sequencing of the mitochondrial gene CO1 clearly shows these insects are isolated from other species (barcoded) of the genus and reinforces our descriptions. The validity of the Texan subspecies, Ceratonia undulosa polingi Clark, 1929, is discussed. The caterpillar of Dolbogene hartwegii (Butler, 1875) is illustrated for the first time and its host plant identified : TECOMA STANS, Bignoniaceae.
